Let’s talk about the most effective strategy to train your abs. A lot of people think that what you really want to do is train your abs specifically, meaning your rectus abdominis or your six pack muscle. This involves doing endless crunches, backward hip extensions, training from oblique crunches, and ab rollers and ab devices. This is really not the way to go. The truth of the matter is you can train your abs much more effectively without ever doing a sit-up, and you can do so in a very short amount of time.

You see, what it comes down to is functional ab exercises, or whole body exercises that target systemic fat loss. The best way to do this is to get multiple joints involved so that you can raise your local metabolism in your wrist, your elbow, your shoulder, your spine, your knees, your hips, your ankles, well you get the idea. This creates an overall or global metabolic effect. The reason this is good is because it resolves muscle imbalances, it reduces pain receptor responses which leads to better muscle contractions, and it uses your abs functionally as you do in real life. The carry-over effect that happens from that is incredible. All of a sudden when you’re walking down the street, you can feel as you go to take a step, and you’re sort of controlling your fall forward, you can feel your abs turn on. This abs awareness is actually going to change your behavioral strategy towards life, nutrition, diet, and exercise as well as increase the effectiveness of every exercise you do.

Here’s an explanation. The reason this is going to change your overall approach towards life and diet and all of that, is because when you can feel muscles you work long after you’ve worked them, you’re much more likely to make good decisions. It’s recommended when you do an ab-specific training that you do it early in the morning so that you can carry on your entire day having that extra awareness and standing up straight, feeling the muscles as they work, and knowing that you’re making good decisions along the way in order to not ruin what you already put your effort into.

The next thing to realize is that if you’re using your abs as the day goes on, you can feel that awareness which is really going on as you increase the effect of your exercise. Meaning, instead of your muscles just shortening and shortening, until the point when they’re just cramped up and maybe you get sore or not, you’re using them collectively throughout the day in the way that they’re intended. Your core muscles are your stabilizers. We’re talking about your external and internal obliques, your transverse abdominis, and two little muscles on your back called your multifidi. These are triangularly shaped muscles and they actually run all the way up your spine, however primarily we’re concerned with the low back muscles and this is what prevents joint pain and stabilizes your spine. What this comes down to in the front area and you’ll notice, the six-pack muscle is not mentioned, is your obliques wrap around what’s called the lumbar fascia. This is just a really fancy term for a connective web of tissue that attaches your spine so that every time you rotate, it’s holding your spine in place and it’s allowing you to move in a balanced way.

When you treat your body this way and you train your true core, it’s increased awareness and stability throughout the day increases a gazillion-fold. What happens is your body sheds fat, and it knows to do it centrally or right towards your abdomen because your body’s made to not carry extra abdominal weight. In fact, that suggests that you’re having an increased rate of stress overall throughout your day. That’s what your body does when it has extra stress. It increases cortisol, which deposits lower belly fat. So if you really want to get rid of the spare tire, you have to start teaching your body how it can see less stress and more benefit from each and every abs exercise that you do. So the right type of abs training exercises will get the job done.
